Letter from Gary for PMC Bike Ride

I promised I would update Mark's blog by the end of May but it will be a few weeks before I have some definitive information. Mark has had several chemo treatments spaced three weeks apart since my last update. He has had reactions to the chemo for three or four days in the week after treatments but, other than that, he has been better than he has been in the two years since he was diagnosed! He has been golfing or gardening/landscaping daily and our beautiful yard is a supreme testament to his tireless efforts. He has a Pt scan next week and we will have results by mid-June. He is feeling very optimistic and the doctors have promised that they will let him enjoy a Cape Cod summer treatment-free if his tests are promising.
Meanwhile, we are very proud that Gary is training for his participation in the Pan-Mass Challenge to help raise funds for a cure for cancer. Following is his request for donations towards his efforts. If you can possibly lend your support, it will be GREATLY appreciated.
Meanwhile, I will update you again by mid-June.
Hope you are all enjoying our very late spring!
Nancy

Dear Friends and Family;

The support and encouragement you have extended to my family in the past few years has inspired me to raise money to fund cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). This August, I will be riding a bicycle across MA, 192 miles, in the Pan-MASS Challenge, to help this meaningful cause. Through our family’s journey, countless people shared personal stories heightening my awareness that cancer has touched everyone’s lives. I am compelled to do what I can to help find a cure and I would really appreciate your help.
I was just 28 years old when diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. With an early diagnosis and incredible medical care, including a very smooth chemotherapy and radiation process, I beat it. However, after two years of treatments, my father continues his battle with cancer. We both sought second opinions and received expert analysis at DFCI and were both lucky to receive the majority of our treatments right here on Cape Cod. I was fortunate, millions have been spent on the research over the years to find an effective treatment plan for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and I am one grateful beneficiary. With the same diagnosis 30-50 years ago, I may well have died. There have been incredible advancements in cancer treatments in the past few decades and I’m truly optimistic that there are more on the horizon. Unfortunately, the research to yield a cure is expensive.
I have learned a lot from Cancer and think I am a better person for having faced the challenge. It’s my time to give back. I hope you are able to join me as I launch a new battle against cancer. I could use your help in raising funds in the fight for a cure.
Here is a link to my page online: http://www.pmc.org/mypmc/profiles.asp?Section=story&eGiftID=GS0102, where you can easily donate with a credit card. Otherwise, you are welcome to send a check made out to “PMC” to my office address;

I sincerely appreciate any amount you are able to donate. Every single dollar will add more momentum to my ride and help (DFCI) to continue the fight.

With appreciation,

Gary M. Sheehan
